Remember, even if you did not get a certificate, our other incentives are still available:

Discounted rates on spay/neuter will be available at participating clinics through the month of March!
Anyone who spays/neuters their dog or cat during the month of March will qualify for our prize drawing!

Certificate Release for 2012 Campaign

Special spay/neuter certificates worth up to $50 will be available

for people who could not otherwise afford to have their animals fixed
beginning on Thursday, February 23 at 9:00 a.m. until supplies run out
from the Adair County Humane Shelter on Hwy. 6 (West of Kirksville)
during regular shelter hours: Monday-Friday 9-4 and Saturday 9-12
on a first-come, first-served basis (supplies are limited to 140)
limit two per household except in extraordinary circumstances
must be redeemed during the month of March 2012

Note: Funds for these certificates come from special donations from individuals who care deeply about the welfare of animals in this county and from two small grants; they do not come from the Shelter's regular, modest operating budget. We reserve the right to refuse to give certificates to individuals at our discretion.

Pedigree Foundation Awards Grant!

On December 7, 2011 the Pedigree Foundation awarded the Adair County Humane Society a grant of $891. This grant will fund (in part) our Prevent a Litter 2012 campaign. We are grateful for this recognition and support of our efforts to help more dogs find homes!

Late Spring Progress Report

Although 2011 was only the second year of the campaign, we have already seen a remarkable decrease in the number of dogs and puppies brought to the shelter: more spay/neuter has led to fewer unwanted animals. Our shelter manager reports that she has seen many fewer puppies coming into the shelter recently and that we have taken in only one pregnant dog so far this spring.

Sadly, the number of cats and kittens coming into the shelter remains high. It may take several years for the results of our efforts to affect the feline community. Please spread the word: spay or neuter your cats!

212 Dogs/Cats Fixed!

110 cats and 102 dogs were spayed/neutered during our March 2011 "Be a PAL -- Prevent a Litter" campaign!

Our prize drawing was held on April 12, 2012 at 3:00 PM. All winners have been notified by phone and are asked to claim their prizes by the end of this month.

The winner of our grand prize (a Nintendo Wii) was Janice Hopewell who spayed a two month old kitten named Babe.

ASPCA awards $2000 grant!

We found out today that the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has awarded us a $2000 grant to help fund March 2011's Prevent a Litter campaign! This support from a national organization is a terrific endorsement of the good work we are doing and it guarantees the future of this program. We are ever so grateful!

Three Incentives to Spay/Neuter during March 2011

The Adair County Humane Society is pleased to announce our second annual “Be a PAL – Prevent a Litter” spay/neuter campaign:

1) Several local veterinarians have agreed to reduce their rates for spay/neuter during this month. (See post below for more details.)

2) 100 spay/neuter certificates worth up to $50 will be available for those in financial need. Certificates may be picked up from the Animal Shelter starting on February 15.

3) Anyone who spays or neuters their dog and/or cat during March 2011 will be eligible to enter our prize drawing. Our grand prize will be a Nintendo Wii game console donated by a private individual; other prizes have been donated by local businesses.

March 2011 Spay/Neuter Campaign is on!

We just received word yesterday that a long-time supporter has made a generous donation to our March 2011 spay/neuter campaign!

Although we still have some fund-raising and grant-writing to do, we can now state definitively that we will be giving away 100 spay/neuter certificates (each worth up to $50) for use during March 2011! The certificates will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to those in financial need from the Humane Shelter on Hwy. 6 West starting on February 15. There will be a limit of two coupons per household except in extraordinary circumstances.

Gearing up for March 2011 Campaign

Lydia (pictured left) is one of the the summer of 2010's mama dogs. She arrived at the shelter pregnant, gave birth to her puppies in August, and now (more than three months later) is still waiting to be adopted. Let's try to prevent a replay of this sad and completely avoidable situation next year!

Even though spring seems far away, it's time to start planning the March 2011 "Prevent a Litter" Campaign. Last year we gave away $3000 worth of coupons to spay/neuter sixty animals. In 2011 our goal will be to raise and then give away $5000 worth of coupons to help spay/neuter one hundred animals.

We are applying for grants from ASPCA, Best Friends Grassroots Grants, and PetSmart Charities, but will also need donations from concerned local citizens in order to achieve our goal. Please consider making a special end-of-year gift to the Adair County Humane Society's "Prevent a Litter" Campaign.

Prevent a Litter Campaign: March 2010

The Adair County Humane Society of Kirksville, Missouri is proud to announce that our March 2010 “Be a PAL -- Prevent a Litter” campaign exceeded our expectations: 101 animals--59 dogs and 42 cats--were fixed as part of this campaign!

Sixty people received $50 coupons to offset the cost of the procedure. Many more took advantage of special discounts from local veterinarians. There were over one hundred entries for our prize drawing. We commend community members for taking this essential step to end pet overpopulation.

We thank the ASPCA for a grant that funded thirty of our $50 certificates, as well as the many anonymous local donors who have asked us to put their money to work on spay/neuter efforts.

We thank Missy (shelter manager) and Shelly (adoption coordinator) for managing the extra phone calls and the influx of visitors at the humane shelter, as well as for their daily efforts (routine and extraordinary) on behalf of the homeless animals of our area.

Introducing our "Be a PAL -- Prevent a Litter" March Campaign!

The Adair County Humane Society is introducing a new campaign whereby we provide incentives for people to spay/neuter their cats and/or dogs during the month of March.

This campaign has three components:

sixty spay/neuter coupons worth up to $50 are available for people those in financial need;
several local veterinarians are reducing their rates for spay/neuter during the month of March;
anyone who spays or neuters their dog or cat during the month will be eligible to win a prize in our drawing. Our GRAND PRIZE will be a Nintendo Wii gaming console, courtesy of anonymous private donors. Local businesses (such as Pawsitive Animalworks, Tractor Supply, Kirksville Feed and More, and Walmart) have generously donated gift certificates and merchandise for additional prizes.

Our goal is to help spay/neuter 60 cats and/or dogs during March of 2010.

We hope that the community at large will join us and support this goal in whatever way that it can – through donations, discounts, and positive publicity.

ASPCA Grant!

Terrific news! The ASPCA has awarded us a $1,500 grant for our March 2010 spay/neuter initiative, Be a PAL, Prevent a Litter! This matches $1500 from local donors and means that we can give away twice as many certificates!

Give a girl a break!

This mama dog was one of fifteen pregnant animals (8 cats and 7 dogs) who were dropped off at the Adair County Humane Society in the spring of 2009. Folks at the shelter do what they can, but eight weeks is a long time to care for so many mamas, puppies, and kittens. Because of this experience, we decided to work harder to promote spay/neuter next spring.
